Engagement Shoot – Charlotte & Richard

Bristol Wedding PhotographerRichard proposed to Charlotte in Clevedon, just a little north of Weston-super-Mare.

This seaside town is largely unspoiled by the noisy bright lights of other popular seaside locations. So Charlotte asked if they could have a pre-wedding shoot on the pier. Charlotte has a plaque on the pier with her name on it. We spent quite a long time not finding it. But it is there she tells us. Honest!

Anyway – a pier shoot. Yes please.

Victorian architecture is so very appealing. It’s a bit quirky. Looks like it should last forever. And because it speaks of an age where anything seemed possible, it is simply reassuring.

Add to that a great couple and a wonderful mellow, sunny autumn day and you can’t go wrong.

Here come a few images from the afternoon.

Tortworth Court Wedding Venue

We’ve shot a couple of weddings at Tortworth Court Hotel in Gloucestershire and been guests too. As a photographer, Tortworth Court offers an amazing variety of locations for a wedding shoot. Far too many for a single wedding. Indeed, far too many for a whole heap of weddings.

As we looked around again this September, we were struck by the similarity between the central atrium in Tortworth and a rather European café we visited in Dublin. A café inside the Chester Beatty museum.

We had been to Tortworth almost exactly a year to the day beforehand. On that occasion we met Sam and Martin who went on to book us to shoot their wedding in September 2012.

The house itself is full of detail and curious carvings and reliefs. It has a grand portico at the front. Just to the side is a lovely orangery. And to the far side of the house is a permanent marquee for the larger weddings.

Trees in the grounds are listed as part of an arboretum. They are spectacular. And September always hints at the glories of the autumn to come.

The trees together with the extensive gardens make for some great photography. Too often we have found some wedding venues to be lacking. Some of them lacking a lot.

But Tortworth Court is superb. We could happily come here again and again. Knowing that each wedding shoot would be very different. Personal. Unique.

Our cup of tea.

The biggest challenge is not to get carried away.

Here are a few shots from around Tortworth Court.

If you love Tortworth as much as we do, chat to us about what you would like from your wedding photographs.

Wedding – Caroline & Tom – Wellington Barn, Wiltshire

Caroline and Tom were made for each other. They have infectious smiles. Tom has an infectious laugh too. This was a very memorable wedding. From the glorious blue skies. The fantastic 1931 Lagonda. The historic 11th century Norman church. The amazing Wiltshire countryside. Wellington Barn in Calstone. And the most perfect sunset.
Throw in an unexpected visitor to the ceremony. Then a combine harvester or two. What you have are all the ingredients for a day not to be forgotten quickly.
Although Caroline and Tom have been together for 11 years, we only knew about 6 weeks ago that we were going to shoot their wedding day.
We’d met them back in August in Bath for their pre-wedding shoot and instantly knew we were going to enjoy their wedding.
We weren’t disappointed.
Caroline arrived at her mums house, just a mile or two from the church with her hair and makeup completed, but still to change into her dress – a stunning and understated creation which she duly modified whilst coming down the stairs.
Once at the church, Caroline, Tom, the Vicar and all the guests were treated to something extraordinary. A bat flew into the ceremony. Now, bats aren’t normally interested in weddings. At least in my experience. This one was the exception to the rule. Although he must have had another appointment, since he left just before the first kiss…
From the church, A 1931 Lagonda driven by Tim took the couple to Wellington Barn and the rolling open countryside of Wiltshire.
Towards the end of the wedding breakfast, we managed to get Caroline and Tom away from the guests. It was the last 20 minutes before sunset.
How we wish we had shots like that from our wedding day…

Wedding – Lucy & Nick – Stonehouse Court Hotel

Stonehouse Court Wedding - Lucy & NickFinally the sun has decided to shine properly this summer. And its only September!

The glorious arrival of warm weather and blue skies couldn’t have come a moment too soon for the wedding of Lucy and Nick at the Stonehouse Court Hotel.

They had a lot going on with their wedding.

Their plans included nice cars for the lads to arrive at the church in style. But that was nothing to what Lucy would arrive in. Leaving her parents home, it was about a 15 minute trot from the church in Eastington, Gloucestershire.

Yes, we said trot , as Lucy would be travelling in a pony and trap, or possibly horse and open carriage. Complete with two coach-women and a coach-man.

Meanwhile, at the church, a chat with the Vicar, Michael, revealed that this was the most helpful vicar ever! Michael understood why couples want photographs of their ceremony. And allowed us to get some great photos. It was so refreshing to feel we were allies in making their day special.

And whilst they signed the register Ed Goulding sang and accompanied himself on guitar.

The surprises continued after the ceremony. A lovely red double-decker bus allowed guests to board for the journey to the Hotel. Both driver and ticket collector were just as friendly as the pony & trap drivers. And this unusual form of transport made for some memorable photos.

By this point we were out of breath.

Fast-forward to Stonehouse Court Hotel and the kids were treated to a bouncy castle whilst guests enjoyed a Pims or two.

And what about the first dance? Well, Nick says he hates dancing. Which can be a bit of a problem. But after beginning in the standard drape-our-arms-around-each-other-and-just-shuffle-around-the-floor move, the music changed and Lucy and Nick began an amazing routine just for their guests. Just like Fred & Ginger. In case you didn’t know, Lucy is a dance teacher.

Did we mention the day was full of surprises?

As soon as they’d finished, and much to their surprise, Lucy’s brother asked the DJ to play another track and began himself to dance. Only to be joined flash-mob style by the bridesmaids, ushers and even Lucy’s parents in another cool routine.

So here’s a taster of their days photography. Feel free to comment at the bottom of this page.
