Wedding – Sam & Martin – Tortworth Court Gloucestershire

Samantha & Martin at TortworthIt was almost exactly a year to the day prior to their wedding that Sam and Martin met us at Tortworth Court in Gloucestershire and commissioned us to be their photographers.

They had chosen their wedding venue and ceremony location with great care. Naturally they wanted to make sure their photographers would produce the same quality of images. Photographs with a mixture of contemporary and more traditional images.

What was key to both of them was to capture all the fun, anticipation and excitement. They wanted to see themselves, their families and their closest friends having a great time.

The wedding day arrived and so first stop for me was Tortworth Court, where the guys were getting ready. And a surprise for Martin arrived in the guise of as an ‘A’ Team van, complete with theme music, which pulled up to take him to church. Don’t you love it when a plan comes together…

Miranda meanwhile was with Sam who was getting ready at her parents home along with her 3 bridesmaids. Sam, initially, didn’t think she wanted any bridal prep shots. But having changed her mind just the Wednesday before, it was nice to see how quickly she became relaxed with Miranda capturing the fun of the morning. Their wedding transport was a little more sedate – a lovingly maintained 1930 deep blue Austin Six.

Uh-oh. I know what Miranda’s thinking…’ Yet another excuse for Stuart to go off to shoot the car.’ Not that I really need the excuse.

It was close to pandemonium at the church when I arrived. The earlier wedding appeared to have overrun considerably. They were still taking their own wedding shots just minutes before Martin arrived.

And the wonderful florists, Jane and Kaleah of the Handmade Store in Winterbourne, had been waiting discretely, patiently, but increasingly nervously, to have access to the church to decorate it. The job they did in a very short time was nothing less than miraculous.

Talking of miracles, Sam realised that she needed more tables for guests than originally planned and asked the florists to make up the extra table decorations. So, good as gold, they had been to the wholesalers at 4am that morning to get all the additional flowers, foliage and display items specific to Samantha’s wedding.

That’s the kind of florists you need!

Waiting outside the portico to Tortworth Court was the irrepressible James, donned in the reddest red coat you’re likely to have seen.

James is the Toastmaster at Tortworth. He is without doubt one of the best Toastmasters we have ever come across. His enthusiasm, attention to detail and jolly professionalism is second to none.

When Sam and Martin collected their proofing album, they told us how James, with a sword, had removed not just the cork from a bottle of champagne, but the top of the bottle neck too.

We found that hard to believe – until we checked the photographs we had taken. Sure enough, the bottle neck was cleanly cut and the cork, whizzing through the air, had the other part of the neck still attached to it.

Wow!

Well, its time for us to keep quiet and let the photographs speak for themselves.

We hope you enjoy looking at them as much as we enjoyed taking them. (Watch out for the monster at the end..)

If you were a guest at the reception, then the full galleries are live now and you can see them by clicking the Galleries menu above.

Tortworth Court Wedding Venue

We’ve shot a couple of weddings at Tortworth Court Hotel in Gloucestershire and been guests too. As a photographer, Tortworth Court offers an amazing variety of locations for a wedding shoot. Far too many for a single wedding. Indeed, far too many for a whole heap of weddings.

As we looked around again this September, we were struck by the similarity between the central atrium in Tortworth and a rather European café we visited in Dublin. A café inside the Chester Beatty museum.

We had been to Tortworth almost exactly a year to the day beforehand. On that occasion we met Sam and Martin who went on to book us to shoot their wedding in September 2012.

The house itself is full of detail and curious carvings and reliefs. It has a grand portico at the front. Just to the side is a lovely orangery. And to the far side of the house is a permanent marquee for the larger weddings.

Trees in the grounds are listed as part of an arboretum. They are spectacular. And September always hints at the glories of the autumn to come.

The trees together with the extensive gardens make for some great photography. Too often we have found some wedding venues to be lacking. Some of them lacking a lot.

But Tortworth Court is superb. We could happily come here again and again. Knowing that each wedding shoot would be very different. Personal. Unique.

Our cup of tea.

The biggest challenge is not to get carried away.

Here are a few shots from around Tortworth Court.
