Wedding – Bex & Nick – Wedding Photographer Devon

wedding photographer Devon, Woolacombe, Croyde, VW, classic VWDevon Wedding Photography in Woolacombe and Croyde

Bex and Nick had chosen the last weekend in March (the one where the clocks change) for their wedding in Woolacombe, north Devon.

When we first met them last summer, Bex had said how she really wanted a beach shoot.

Okay? we said, wondering what sort of weather-proofing we would need on the camera should a force nine be coming up the Bristol Channel.

Anyway, the day arrived with the forecast for stunningly lovely weather, warm and completely blue, cloudless skies.

Wow!

And then Bex’ wedding transport turned up. Wow again! It was the most astonishly amazing classic VW. I had to try very hard to remember that I was photographing a wedding, not a shoot for a classic car magazine…

They were married at St Sabinius church in Woolacombe and their reception was at the Manor country pub in Croyde. This was probably the most relaxed and laid-back wedding we have ever been to, helped very much by the wonderful barbeque wedding breakfast. And very kindly, Bex and Nick had insisted that we too, ate along with their guests. (I love being fed)

So, here are a few images from the day.

If you were a guest then you can see the whole set by visiting the Wedding Galleries and using the details from the picture-card you received at the wedding (or ask Bex and Nick).

Wedding photographer Devon – Essential Kit

wedding photographer essential kit

wedding photographer essential kit

As a wedding photographer there are some things that become absolutely essential.  The obvious are to carry several professional cameras, ensure you have even more good quality lenses and then some other bits.  Some obvious, but others less-so.

Included in these, but not in any particular order are;

  • light-meter
  • monopod
  • tripod
  • flash guns
  • flash stands
  • soft-boxes
  • flash triggers
  • reflectors and diffusers
  • software
  • filters

Its the last of these I want to chat about.

Many people, and that includes not a few enthusiastic photographers, think that a wedding photographer can make just any old image look half-decent.  Why? Because they believe (quite wrongly) that their software can produce miracles.

Now I’m not saying the right software, especially the likes of Lightroom or Photoshop, doesn’t go a long way to pepping-up some otherwise dull photographs.  But even the mighty Photoshop cannot do what some filters can do.

And specifically, I mean what a Polariser filter can do.

In bright, sunny conditions, a polariser filter can make the difference between an OK photo and a gorgeous photograph.

On her wedding day, the bride often has a fairytale idea about what she wants.  And this pretty-much always includes perfect blue skies and warm, sunny, dry, windless weather.  And as a wedding photographer, I will just have to deal with it.

Bright white wedding dresses combined with deep blue skies present a challenge to cameras.  The problem is that whilst our eyes are superb at seeing both extremes of brightness and colour vividly, cameras have not yet reached the same level of sophistication.

But in this situation a polarising filter does what no electronic filter in Lightroom or Photoshop can do as convincingly.  It can deepen the blue whilst helping the contrast.

Not only that, but it can lessen the reflection seen at or through a glass window.

And it can render the surface of water, such as a still lake almost perfectly see-through.  Just enough reflection to look natural, but not so much as its a distraction.

Try getting Photoshop to do all that without many, many hours of post-production!

So, after years of using a pretty cheap polariser, I took the plunge and bought a decent one.  And decent ones are definitely not cheap.  In fact they can cost as much as a decent compact camera!

But thank goodness I did, as Bex and Nick just happened to get the most stunningly wonderful blue-sky wedding day at Woolacoombe and later at Croyde in Devon.

So, as a wedding photographer, I am most definitely going to keep a polariser in my kit.  Whilst I might not use it continuously, when I do, I know it will really make a lovely difference to the quality of my images.

Wedding Photographer Devon – Aimee & Trevor – Berry Head Hotel

Wedding Photographer Devon

Aimee and Trevor almost froze solid during their chilly engagement shoot in Gloucester earlier this year. So it came as no surprise when her mum told me she’d been hunting all over for shawls and wraps and scarves just incase the wedding day was freezing too.

But she need not have worried – it was an absolutely baking hot weekend in Devon. And their wedding location, the Berry Head Hotel, set on low cliffs and with a lovely walled garden and an astounding view of the sunset, was simply idyllic.

All wedding days are just a little unpredictable. Who’d have thought that just knotting a cravat could turn out to be so much fun. See if you can work out how many people tried to sort out Trevors’ …

If you were a guest at the wedding, then the postcard given to you at the reception has the login details to view the wedding set.  Click Here to visit the Guest Gallery.

If you counted 5 people including Trevor trying to knot the cravat, you’re at least 1 short – even I had a go at one point 🙂

Wedding Photographer Devon – Rosemary & Julian – Fingle Bridge Inn

Wedding Photographer Devon

Rosemary and Julian had their engagement photoshoot in a very cold but sunny Cheltenham.

And with a meteorologist amongst their guests, we had high hopes of good weather for their wedding day. What a relief then that the torrential rain only happened as we drove back up the M5 later in the evening.

The couple had lots of friends both at the Belmont Chapel in Exeter and afterward at a beautiful location near Drewsteignton on the northern edge of Dartmoor. The Fingle Bridge Inn, complete with the neccessary bridge, and a ruined water-mill hidden amongst the trees, set the scene for some gorgeous photography.

If you were a guest at the wedding, then Rosemary & Julian will have details of how to view more of their wedding day photographs (but only once they have seen them all)
